Kwara really made up for the few lion sightings we had in Khwai with a few small prides of lionesses with cubs.
Our first encounter was with a very shy pride, several females with large cubs, that we spent a good part of a morning tracking (we were really looking for dogs but picked up lion prints). When we did find the cats they bolted from the bushes they were hiding in. They had either had a bad experience with vehicles in the past or had never had much contact with humans. Given the expanse of wilderness in this part of Botswana, I like to think it was the latter.
These two cubs were with a more relaxed pride of 2 females and seven cubs that were found in the late afternoon. We spent a little time with them.
