Such a unique vision. I cannot critique with help to improve. You are able to isolate your subject, you create a story that the viewer can finish. Your portfolio is wonderful. Great eye!

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo some days after a concert wich took place within the walls of an old castle in Moura Portugal, my favourite country to take photos!

Time

It was about 6 pm on a wonderful, bright summers day.

Lighting

The light was still quite strong but for this photo good enough, the sun threw nice shadows into the banners and my subject was nicely lit from the front. I didn't use any special settings, just a few quick shots and some luck, taking advantage of the moment.

Equipment

I have a Lumix DMC-TZ60, all my photos are taken with this little miracle of a camera...The best thing about this camera is that it has a good Leica lens and it is very easy to carry with you because it practically fits in your back pocket.

Inspiration

I was looking for my wife when I saw her walking on the castle wall. The banners wich were left flying in the wind after a concert, created a great depth to the scene and a strange sense of perspective. I didn't want to spoil the spontanious moment because she was walking there without knowing I was taking shots of her. So I just hoped the wind would help me out at just the right moment and it did! I quickly took about ten, twelve photos and this was the best one.

Editing

I did a little post processing in Lightroom, because I originally shot this photo in color but it turned out to be better in black and white. I re-edited this photo because I have learned more about Lightroom and contrast in black and white in general.

In my camera bag

I don't have any equipment in my bag (yet) I am a beginning photographer and I am learning to use a camera, to look for the good light, composition and point of view. One day when I know how to use and set the camera well enough, I will start to think about a bag filled with technical things instead of the need to understand how it works first...

Feedback

The first and best advice I can give anybody is to be patient and wait until that one moment you are looking for comes around... But before you can take the photo, you have to have an idea what you want to achieve and where. Look when the light will be good and from what position you want to take your photo. The right time of day and the right weather are important as well. I was trying to take a nice photo of the waving banners but I missed something in the composition… I saw my wife walking on the stone wall in the direction of the banners. I wanted the shot to be spontanious without her noticing me, so I had very little time to change my idea about the photo… When I walk through a city or anywhere else, I allways look around me very carefully to see the details of wich the world around me is build up. I try to look through a pinhole, without forgetting the whole picture. If you look at a subject to photograph, you have to try to realise what kind of composition you want to create... And most of all, take more shots with slightly different settings so you can choose the best one. Once you get home and open your laptop, the magic of today's world begins... I allways crop it later into the size and composition I like best. Crop the photo in different ways, so you can choose the best one the next day when you can have a fresh look at them!
