Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in the Kgalagadi Transfrontierpark, South Africa at the Rooiputs Waterhole.

Time

Shortly before sunset. Around 19.30h, in November 2019!

Lighting

When I recognized the Scene, my first thougt was - unfortunately against the sun:-( So I tried to find a good position where I could see the Action with all the dust and flies flying around. Gladly I found it - nice backlit shooting.

Equipment

The shot was taken with a Canon 5D MarkIV and a Canon EF 100-400 LSII. Since I was on the way with my car, the Cam was positioned on a bean bag.

Inspiration

In the early morning, while still in my tent at the Campsite, I noticed a Lion Kill at the watherhole nearby. The light in the morning and during the day, wasn't that good so I hoped for a better light in the evening around sunset. Lions usually stay with their prey for the whole day. So my chances were good that they would still be there. After returning to the sighting @sunset it was fascinating to witness the action and the power of the Lion turning the Carcas (Eland-Antelope) around. With all the dust and bugs flying around it was a great scenerie for me.

Editing

The original raw-file I edited in Lightroom. Not to much, just a little bit in color, contrast and luminosity.

In my camera bag

CAMS: Canon 5D MarkIV and Lumix S1H. LENSES: Canon 100-400mm, Canon 16-35mm, Sigma 150-600 Sport, Sigma 24-70mm. Tripod, Beanbags and a view Filters.

Feedback

For Wildlife Photography its important that you take your time, because nothing happens at the push of a button! The best scenes enfold while waiting mostly at the waterholes. Try to postition yourself at the best spot for the perfect light, mainly during sunrise or sunset. And it always takes a portion of luck.
