Behind The Lens

Location
This image was made along the Merced River in my favorite national park, Yosemite.
Time
The end of day is an amazing time in the Yosemite valley. Shadows on the hanging cliffs along with the reflected light off of the granite makes it feel like you are shooting in a light box!
Lighting
I shoot with natural light only. This is the reason I spend most of my shooting time early and late in the day.
Equipment
This was shot with a Nikon D810, Nikon 24-120mm f4.0, Gitzo tripod, RRS head.
Inspiration
I spend a ton of time in Yosemite. It never disappoints! The light in the fall is wonderful, and the cottonwoods provide a wonderful color reflection in the river. With the lower water in the fall, the river slows to a crawl revealing the reflections.
Editing
I shoot in RAW so post processing is a necessity. However since I have been in photography since the film days, I am processing to reveal what I saw at the time. For this I use Adobe Lightroom CC and Photoshop CC.
In my camera bag
I always carry 2 camera bodies (one for emergencies), a wide angle zoom, a midrange zoom, and a telephoto zoom. So I cover everything from 14mm to 400 mm. I also cary cleaning materials for my lenses AND my sensors. Being in the field, and especially now that I carry a mirrorless body, sensors get dirty. In addition I carry ND filters, circular polarizing filters, and UV filters.
Feedback
Be in the park at the beginning and end of the day. Spend more than one day there if you have not been, and scout. Always look behind you as you hike around in the park.
