Behind The Lens

Location

I was with my muse Nicole, a very good Italian model, in the photo studio of a friend from Chivasso, a suburb of Turin

Time

When I took this photograph it was early in the morning, the light coming from the window was terrible but, with a little attention, moving around the model, I found the most suitable place to photograph.

Lighting

There is not much to say about the lighting, the morning sun filtering through a window, the hard shadows sharp as blades, the angelic face of the dreamer, me trying to move to find the right angle. That's it!

Equipment

I have been asked in the past what I use to take photographs in difficult lighting conditions ... I will tell you that also for this photo I used one of my faithful Eos 5D MkIII, in my opinion one of Canon's best managed cameras. Although my camera bodies are now 10 years old and well exceeded 150,000 shots, they work perfectly and continue to give me a lot of satisfactions. The files that generate the 5D MkIII are exciting for the quality and for the extreme ease with which you can finish the files. Too bad they stopped making it ... Let's talk about serious things, let's talk about technical data: Canon EF macro 100mm f/2.8 L IS USM lens - Aperture f / 2.8 - ISO 800 - Shutter 1/250

Inspiration

I think the real strength of this image was improvisation. The model was tired after spending the previous night having fun, I told her to relax and close her eyes. In that moment of absolute tranquility she assumed the dreamy expression of who really feels good with herself and the world, in that precise moment I decided that it would be the most beautiful and important shot of all the photographic service. This is an example of how a snapshot, without tricks, without elaboration, can really please the people who observe it.

Editing

Normally some nude / glamor / fashion photographers tend to use post-production a lot, I prefer to try to photograph the subject in the best possible way and to have immediately usable images. I believe that post production is important but, in the production chain of an image, it does not have my priority. For me, the priority is due to the idea that you have in creating a photograph, to the technique you use, shooting (framing, cutting, glance) and attention to detail. For me it doesn't make sense to spend hours with the PS clone to remove or add something that you could already delete or add during shooting. My elaboration is very simple, I shoot in RAW consequently the images are rather soft and flat, therefore I increase the contrast, I correct the dominant ones, I regulate the shadows and the lights and finally I emphasize little the vignetting to attract the eye towards the subject, that's all.

In my camera bag

My equipment ... don't you have a backup question? :) I always carry too many things in my photographic backpack ... after having woven the praises of the Canon reflex cameras I have to do the same with Sony's mirroless, I have only used them for a year but between us it has been true love !! But I have not completely betrayed Canon, in fact the two systems coexist and what unites them is the Sigma MC-11 adapter, a fantastic accessory that allows me to use my Canon lenses on Sony bodies. Obviously I also use different Sony Zeiss and G series lenses but all these lenses have a weight :( My unmissable lenses to always carry with me are: 85mm - 50mm - 35mm - 20mm - 16/35 - 24/105mm and 70/200mm and then for special cases such as architecture or landscapes or macro, the 17mm TS-E - 12/24mm - 300mm - 100mm L macro IS

Feedback

If someone asked me for advice to take a picture like this, I would tell him to pay attention to the control of the lights, especially as in this case there was only one light source with very strong characteristics and intensity. Obviously in this picture the role of the model who is relaxing because she was very tired, was decisive. The other winning factor that applies to any photograph is simplicity and "cleanliness", in the sense that the best photos, the ones that make you say WOW or that are rewarded, are those in which the photographer has removed as many disturbing elements as possible. Unfortunately I see that many photographers tend to add, add and again add ... and maybe afterwards they spend the night on PS or LR to remove, remove, remove :-D
