Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on a family vacation in the south of France. While doing a visit to a small French town, I came across this fenomenal old-timer. But because it was parked against a boring background, I had to get creative to make it into an appealing picture.

Time

It was high noon in summer in the south of France.

Lighting

Since the location and time of day, there was a lot of harsh sunlight. I used a neutral density filter to tone down the light.

Equipment

Because it was a family trip, I was travelling "light" (but never go out without my camera). The picture was taken with my NIKON D3200 with a Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II Lens. Even if it is a "kit-lens", I find it very versatile and light and small to carry around. I used a ND-filter to tone down the harsh light.

Inspiration

I really like nice old-timers but prefer to take pictures of details within them. Pictures showing the whole car often reveal they are not within the propre 'time-frame'. When only hightlighting specific details, there is much left to dream away.

Editing

As I always photograph in RAW, I always do some postprocessing. In this case I dit some cropping to really highlight the headlight and to create a diagonal effect with the lines in the picture. I did some enhancing off the colours to accentuate the "rusty" feel of the bodywork and I enhanced the contrast to accentuate the lines. Finally I added a bit of vignette to give some added depth to the picture.

In my camera bag

It al depends on the occasion. When I go out with my family (tourist-mode) I travel very light with only My Nikon D3200 (recently replaced by a D5600) and the Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II Lens. Depending wheather and time I often bring also a ND-filter to compensate for harsh light. When I go exploring by myself (scout-mode) I add to the above kit a Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED Lens and when in urban environment Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G Lens. When on a mission (mission-mode) I take the full monty with on top Nikon AF-P DX NIKKOR 10-20mm f/4.5-5.6G VR Lens, a bunch of filters (ND, CPL and macro), the tripod and a remote control. And always, with no exception, a backup battery en SD-card.

Feedback

To often we are looking for "big" pictures where everything falls into place. And granted, when you find it (and have the right equipment on you), the result can be very fulfilling. But in the last few years, I have learned and trained on spotting the details within... and often, even with limited equipment, I find myself having taken some nice shots.
