The Valley is called after the Jere river, which runs from the Andes Mountains through the Salar de Atacama, and on whose banks, the town of Toconao sits. The stream ends in a ravine creating an oases in the desert, with its generous clear, clean, sweet drinkable water from the mountain springs. Most of the fruit trees that grow on its banks are irrigated. The surrounding gardens are owned by their community members. The water of the river is community property.
