This was taken during the Farewell Mass Ascension at the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta 2019 on the fiesta grounds.Time
7:50 AM on a clear 53°F mid October morning.Lighting
Just natural lighting. Civil twilight ended about 40 mins before the shot and the sun was still low in the sky just coming over the mountains to the east which provided a nice side lighting on the balloons.Equipment
Canon 6D MKII with an EF 24-70 f-2.8L II USM lens mounted on a Manfrotto 190X tripod with the 496RC2 ball head.Inspiration
I wanted to capture a photo of the balloon fiesta that would give the viewer a sense of what it was like to stand there and watch the balloons slowly ascend and get smaller the further they floated away.Editing
This was a 3 shot panoramic in portrait orientation. Basic image adjustments and sharpening done in Lightroom. Panoramic stitching, further sharpening, dust/object removal and curves adjustments done in Photoshop.In my camera bag
I like to be prepared for a wide range of shots when I travel so my bag is usually heavy. 6D MKII and 6D as a backup body. Sigma 14mm f/1.8 DG HSM and Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM for my wide angle shots. Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM and EF 300mm f/2.8 L USM for my telephoto/zoom shots. I use an Extender EF 2x III with the 70-200 and 300 lenses, so that’s in the bag too. My tripod is a Manfrotto 190X tripod with the 496RC2 ball head. Lastly, I use a Hahnel Captur Pro when I need to use an external intervalometer.Feedback
My advice would be to know your gear and try to see the shot you are trying to take before you hit the shutter release. For this shot I knew I wanted to have more detail in a larger print so I chose to do a panoramic in portrait orientation. I wasn’t looking for a long panoramic so I kept the angle of view short when panning. I was picturing something that would look good as both a print and as a wallpaper on a computer monitor so I angled the camera up to keep any buildings or trees out of the field of view. They start early in the morning so be prepared for changing light conditions and lens flares depending on the direction you are shooting.
