Fabulous capture. This is such a beautiful image. I love how the cloud coverage accents the architecture

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in St Petersburg Russia. It's the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood. It was built on the site where Alexander II's assassination occurred in 1881. I was traveling thru Russia and this is a very popular tourist destination.

Time

I was there in the late afternoon when it was cloudy and appeared ready to rain. Also in the late afternoon there were fewer crowds.

Lighting

Fortunately the clouds softened the light and allowed the colors to shine. I was afraid it was going to rain and I wanted to get a shot while the light was good.

Equipment

As I am mainly a traveler I only carried small cameras such as the Olympus C-350Zoom. Traveling through Europe for an extended time it was more convenient. Only in the last couple of years have I began taking multiple lenses and a tripod.

Inspiration

I wanted to capture images that were unique to Russia. The front of the Church is on the other side facing a small street and this view gave sufficient distance to capture the entire Church as well as having a reflection in the canal.

Editing

When I took this photo my editing skills were minimal. A couple of years after I took this I started working with Lightroom. This image was one of my first editing attempts. I lowered the exposure and added contrast. I wanted to remove the power lines but didn't know how at this point. I have since updated this photo and removed the power lines but left the rest as it was.

In my camera bag

Today I carry a Nikon D3400 or a Nikon Z6 along with a wide angle and telephoto lens. I also carry a couple of filters, a tripod, a remote release, extra cards and batteries. Not in my bag but on my phone I have photo site opportunities such as PhotoHound and PhotoPills.

Feedback

This shot was taken without consideration of conditions as it is a simple travel or tourist shot. I did have a plan of the various spots I wanted to see that day and was checking them off my list. Even then, as I approached the Church from the front I realized I wasn't going to get the shot I had visioned in my mind. I walked around the back and down the side street to get a better view. My advice would be to plan and organize your day so that you arrive at your desired site when there are less crowds. Even in unfavorable conditions composition of your shot is the most important thing you can control.
