Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Vickery Creek Falls in Roswell, GA which is a suburb located about 20 miles north of Atlanta.

Time

The model and I met at the location on a Saturday morning in late September a little before 9am. There was a short walk and climb down of an embankment to get to the falls area. Once we got to the area we got started right away. So, this photo was taken on a Saturday morning around 9:30am.

Lighting

I typically try to travel light when going to locations such as this especially when I do not have someone there assisting me as was the case on this day. Therefore, the only lighting equipment that I had was a speed light. However, given the shooting distance between myself and the model I had to rely on natural light for this shoot.

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon D750 with a 70-200mm lens; no other equipment was used.

Inspiration

The model and I both were looking to do a shoot involving water. We had discussed a few possible locations. However, this location was one that we both were familiar with and I was confident that we would be able to get some great images there. That particular day the water from the falls was very light due to the dry conditions in GA so I positioned the model in an area where the fall looked it's fullest for the resulting photo.

Editing

This photo was processed in Lightroom and Photoshop. The photo was initially uploaded into Lightroom and transferred over to Photoshop where I retouched the models skin using frequency separation and dodge and burn. Also, I typically do some level adjustments to add a little depth to photos such as this. Then the photo was transferred back to Lightroom where I used a customized preset to add the overall look and feel of the photo.

In my camera bag

So, what I carry in my bag typically depends on the location and subject matter that I am shooting. However, my go to equipment for most location shoots such as this includes my D750, 70-200mm, 50mm prime, SB 700 speed light, and a tripod. If I have an assistant helping me I would usually have another bag containing some additional lighting equipment and a reflector.

Feedback

When shooting models in nature always have a plan that includes several alternatives because you never know what the actual conditions will be until you reach your destination. Also, discuss the details of the shoot with the model in advance as much as possible to ensure that you all are on the same page on your expectations for the shoot. The last piece of advice that I would give is try to start as early as possible. Locations such as this are huge tourist attractions so they can get very busy as the day goes. Of course you can work around people and edit them out of photos if necessary, but things are much easier if you don't have to go through that trouble.
