Behind The Lens

Location

On a beautiful fall day in the country I found this butterfly hanging around some late blooming flowers. I was so surprised and very pleased to capture such a fantastic shot.

Time

I took this picture on a cloudy fall day around noon. Fall is my favorite season and I love butterflies and their colored patterns so this is about as perfect of a picture I could have taken for me.

Lighting

When you’re outside taking pictures you’re at the mercy of the elements but I was happy with my cloudy day. Sometimes when you have to squint because of the sun you can miss little details but a cloudy day makes picture taking easier. You do have to take care to get the right angles to get the brightest picture possible.

Equipment

The only equipment I used was my iPhone XS.

Inspiration

I’m always on the lookout for butterflies and but they are usually flying away from me. So I was really happy that this one stayed still long enough for me to capture the shot. And for it to be such a large butterfly with beautiful wings I really count myself lucky that day.

Editing

Since it was a cloudy day I did need to brighten the picture a little but all I used was my iPhone’s editing tools.

In my camera bag

I’m a very simple photographer and just have my iPhone with me.

Feedback

Getting good pictures means being aware of your surroundings. While I do use my iPhone to take pictures I don’t have my head down buried in it. Patience is key and taking things slow will allow you to really see the life around you.
