Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my apartment in the southwest suburbs of Chicago.

Time

It was late in the afternoon with some natural light entering the room threw a transom window above the patio door.

Lighting

The angle of the natural light from the late afternoon sunset had cast a perfect shadow in the room and onto the table she is sitting on. I suggested she put on some baby oil and then a light spray of water on her shoulder. The way the light hit her body I thought was perfect.

Equipment

I took this shot with a Canon 7D Mark II and a Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 IF EX DG lens.

Inspiration

A friend ask if I would be willing to take some nude photos of her. She said she had never done anything like this before. She said it was something that she wanted to do but wasn't sure she wanted to pay a boudoir photographer a fortune for something she may not like. It turned out she fell in love with this photo.

Editing

There is actually very little post processing. I always shoot in raw and the post processing was mainly desaturation and a minor contrast adjustment.

In my camera bag

I always have my Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 IF EX DG lens. This has been my go to lens for so many things, it's extremely versatile for portraits, landscape, action. I don't think you could take a bad shot with it. Then there is my Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 lens. I have this lens for closeups and sports photos. Of course I never leave home without my Canon 7D Mark II, it's a great low light body.

Feedback

Don't be afraid to say to try something outside your comfort zone. Taking a nude shot of a friend was a little intimidating for me at first. But she was comfortable being naked which helped me relax as well. Once we started shooting it was like she wasn't naked at all. Just always remember to keep it professional and relax. If you're relaxed and professional your subject will be as well.
