Behind The Lens

Location

This image is a great example of how you can use one light to create drama. I used an xplor 600 in a 36” softbox, double diffused, and slightly feathered to create a chiseled, dramatic look.

Time

This was taken indoor with a strobe, so it could be replicated any time of day.

Lighting

Lighting is one of the most important aspects of my style of shooting. Using the Xplor 600 and the 36” softbox, I positioned the light just out of frame in order to keep the light as soft as I could and eliminate the chance of unwanted light spill.

Equipment

Nikon Z6, sigma 18-35 1.8, flashpoint Xplor 600, and glow ezlock 36” softbox double diffused.

Inspiration

I knew I wanted to take a dramatic shot using the color of the matt up against the wall, as well as utilizing angles to add more interest and having the light drop off on the backside. After a few minor adjustments, I ended up with exactly what I wanted.

Editing

Yes. I started with adjusting the basic sliders such as bringing down highlights, slightly bringing up shadows, adding a bit more contrast, and adjusting sharpness and color. I then took the image into photoshop to do some skin retouching using dodge/burn as well as frequency separation. In the last steps I used selective color to fine tune my colors and used the highpass sharpening technique to add a bit more clarity to the image.

In my camera bag

Nikon z6, sigma 105 1.4, sigma 18-35 1.8, Nikon 50 1.8, Xplor 400 pro, Xplor 600, a wireless trigger for my strobes, various speed lights, and various modifiers.

Feedback

Start without adding any lighting and try to capture an image that’s almost black. I would generally start at iso 100, f8, and 1/200. Once that step is completed and you have the pose the way you want, add the light in and adjust distance, position, height, feathering, and any light modifiers you have at your disposal.
