Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo ashore Thames River, near the Tower Bridge in London.

Time

It was shot after sunset at blue hour, 10:31pm, in August of 2019.

Lighting

Since it is a landscape, I only used natural light, which was very dim at that hour of day, so I had to use a tripod. I shot 3 raw pictures and combined them later on special software (hdr technique) so as to have details on the highlights as well as on the shadow areas of the scene.

Equipment

I used my Nikon D750 to create this image in combination with my Nikkor 24-120 f4 lense @ 24mm. I mounted it on my tripod and used a remote release cable too.

Inspiration

I love creating night hdr images and I also love architecture, and this scene had them both. I also liked the semantic contrast of the London Tower and the modern scyscrapers.

Editing

I always shoot raw so I have to develop my files in Lightroom. I usually reduce the highlights and increase the shadows, contrast, sharpness, saturation and vibration. In this hdr image I first had to combine 3 photos in 1, so as to have bigger dynamic range.

In my camera bag

I have my Nikon D750 and two Nikkor lenses, the 24-120 f4 and the 50 f1.8. I also usually carry an external flash and a declanser, if I plan to take pictures at night.

Feedback

You should be careful as to where to put your tripod so as it doesn't slip into the water or get hit by passersby!
