Location
This photograph was taken in Montmartre, Paris, which is the Artist's neighborhood in Paris. A lot of painters and other artists are known to have lived in this neighborhood of the capital. This neighborhood is built on a hill overlooking the entire city of Paris with a 360 degree view. On the top of the hill, The "Sacre Choeur" Cathedral (in this picture) carved in white stones.Time
This photo was taken at night on a clear and cold winter day. I was freezing to death as this area of the city is very windy and exposed.Lighting
I was posted in a dark cobber stone street, in a shade of a old arched door, so my camera could not be disturbed by siding lights like lamppost and other city lights, which helped getting the moon to become a point of focus, along with its light's reflection onto the cathedral.Equipment
At the time, I was shooting with a Nikon D3000 (I am a Nikon Addict) with rather high Iso, no flash and longer exposure on a tripodInspiration
The purity of the moonlight, the mystical of the universe and the idea of religion and its symbol, all in a same photograh, has something magical that attracts me. For me, reaching the moon, just like building this massive cathedral stone after stone, has something difficult to imagine and close to the surreal of the human nature ; I am just fascinating by the beauty of it all! And as an artist, this place in Paris has always been like a refuge for me where I can refuel artistically, spiritually (and they also have great typical restaurant with open terrace which are just part of a unique experienceEditing
I worked a bit on contrast and took out some of the noise out of the photograph. when you use longer exposure, there is a tendency to accumulate a bit more grain, which masks a bit the details of some areas. I gave it back the crisp that I could see to my own eye while taking the photograph for a real feel.In my camera bag
In my "day to day" bag, I usually have a Nikon camera (usually the d7000), along with a 18/70mm, a 70-300mm, a fish-eye and a macro 85mm fix, a monopod, a light tripod, a duster, extra batteries, battery chargers, solar panel charger, a wireless remote, filter flash, a flashlight and lots of memory sticks. I use a sliding cross shoulder bag for quick operation and less hard on the back when you walk for long hours. If I carry a bag for a mission (or I am not too sure what I will end up shooting), I usually mount a lens on each camera and carry about 3 cameras so I don't have to switch lenses as I shoot, plus additional flashes and other accessories. As I have more equipment to carry, I use a harness to balance the weight of the equipment on my body and to ease the movement.Feedback
If you shoot on the winter, which I like because the air is usually "purer" in a city and the sky is richer, cover yourself pretty good because you may have to stand and wait in the cold for a long time to get your perfect shoot; I also use gloves to which I cut the tip o the shooting finger so I have all the sensitivity I need on the tip of my finger to shoot at the appropriate time and with the duration I want but keep the rest of my hands warm so it stays active. Because of the sensors on the DSLR, i try to always find a place where it is low surrounding light so it does not triggers the sensors by errors and the sensor can focus fully on the subject. I also use my hand to barrier against any side lights to the sensor for more accuracy. Patience and practice are the keys and taking time for a good setup and a good composition in your visor is half the battle. for this picture, I was with a friend of mine and he gave up and went for a hot chocolate in a near by restaurant after a while.... while I stood in the street for at least one more hour to get my shot. The moon is also very hard to capture because it is bright in light, concise and defines form as it moves in the sky (you notice it clearly when you start to use long exposures and end up with a traveling moon on your photograph..) so the key is to use a longer exposure, but not too long though so you do not track the course of the moon. It also helps when you do not have any side lights interferences witch have tendency to send wrong signals to the sensors
