Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Lion Safari in Hamilton, Ontario. It was taken in August 2018.

Time

As we returned from bus tour, we saw that elephants were taken out of enclosure for a bath. It was about mid day, sun was high. This "little fellow" got my attention, as I was looking thru my viewfinder, because of his freckles. Nice and unique pattern. They were more visible on his right side, so I decided to snap few photos targeting that area.

Lighting

Nice sunny, not that hot or humid day. It was mid day, sun was high, my ISO is always set on 100, manual mode, perfect chance to get the image I wanted.

Equipment

As all my photos, this one is also taken with my "little buddy", Canon T6i. Lens used were EF-S 55-250mm, focal length at 250mm, F 5.6, and speed 1/90. It was taken handheld, no flash was used, all natural light.

Inspiration

As family we love animals, and I like animal portraits, or in general in their natural habitat. With wild animals, you can't tell them what to do, how to stand, or where to look. You need to act was, adjust fast, and take the best photo as you go. It is a memory for a life time.

Editing

General processing was done on ON 1 after effects.

In my camera bag

Variety of lenses, you always need to be ready. 2 sets of wide angle lenses, EF-S 10-22mm, and 17-85mm. EF 50mm prime, and telephoto EF-S 55-250mm, and EF 75-300mm. One flash is always in the bag, same as remote, few filters, and mini tripod.

Feedback

Your eye is your best camera, but you have to know your camera. Everyone has different preferences, but manual mode for me is my choice. Focus, and imagine the photo in your head before you press the trigger. Look for a different angle, perspective. See it with different color. Know your final product, before is stored on the SD card. Simple equation: at the right place, favorable light, right moment, subject of choice, equals photo that you'll never forget.
