Location
This photo was taken at one of my favourite places around. Its a tiny costal town called Happisburgh! There's a small car park, lighthouse and church, but the thing that really attracts me is the constantly eroding cliff face. Every time you visit is different!Time
Sunset. A sunny, but chilly breeze, evening. We were hoping for a little bit of cloud! Of course, when you're hoping for specific weather, or even just a little cloud, it isn't going to happen!Lighting
I wanted to balance the ambient light with flash. I didn't want a super blown out background or under exposed model. So I knew I'd have to light my model. We tried placing the light in a variety of places, but it didn't feel right. Ideally I'd have been able to place the strobe on a similar direction to the sun light path (ie camera left.)Equipment
Fuji xt1 with kit lens, Godox AD200 head with a Pixapro 90cm deep octa, and Godox triggerInspiration
Graveyard shoots are cliché for gothic models. Yet, we still wanted to shoot in a graveyard, in our own way of course.Editing
Luckily the model has good skin, so very little amount of retouching was needed. I had to recover some sky though. Everything else was dodging and burning, finally some colour grade. In my camera bag
Crop sensor mirror less cameras and lenses! I'm not one for the latest and greatest. At the time, I was using just a Fuji xt1 and kit lens. I now also bring an xt2, 35mm 1.4 and 12mm f2 samyang lens. I have had the full frame kit before, and it was too heavy!!! I carry a flash around with me for the most part too, just in case.Feedback
Make sure you have a flash! A normal speedlight probably won't cut it. The Godox AD200 is 4 times the power of a speedlight and it struggled! Also, pay attention to existing light. I wanted the gravestone shadow to pop throw the scene and the sun to light up the window in the background. I had to adjust my angle and focal length to get both of them in the scene!
