One of the many maneuvers that hummingbirds display, often so quickly the human eye doesn’t notice, is the ability to fly backwards. We’ve all seen how quickly one hummer chases another, but it’s hard to see what happens during the burst of speed where the two birds engage without seemingly impacting each other. The backup maneuver enables the bird being chased to quickly fly backward prior to turning in mid flight to avoid the ‘chaser’. Attached is an example of this mid-flight backing up movement.
