I took this photo in our home, by the back door. We live in Cumberland, on Vancouver Island.Time
This was taken mid afternoon in the fall, around 2pm.Lighting
We have beautiful natural light in our home. I enjoy playing with the light to create different moods. Here I was experimenting with backlighting my son as he played with his cars.Equipment
I shot this with my Nikon D750 and my Nikkor 24-70mm f2.8 lens, that's it.Inspiration
I have tons of photos of my son playing with his toy cars but the way the light was falling on him as he played on this particular afternoon just caught my eye. The sheer curtain made for beautiful diffuse light I just had to capture it.Editing
Yes, I used a black and white preset which I then manipulated manually. I bring up the shadows, decrease highlights, sharpen, and add contrast. In my camera bag
I am a simple gal when it comes to my my camera bag. 99% of the time I shoot anything and everything with my Nikon D750 and Nikkor 24-70mm f2.8 lens. This combo is my go to! Sometimes I'll play with my Nikkor 85mm f1.8 lens and of course I've got my awesome 60mm macro lens for close-ups. I very rarely use flash for anything, I will use it only in a pinch. I like to play with natural light whenever I can.Feedback
All the lights were off in my house, so the only available light was coming from behind my son. My advice is to play! Let your subject do their thing and observe. Watch what the shadows do as your subject moves. Be careful to balance your exposure well in camera as you want to ensure you can save details in the shadows and highlights if desired. Happy shooting!
