Behind The Lens

Location

"Skógafoss" is a very popular place to photograph in Iceland. Most photographs look the same, but this one is a little different. There were not many people around, because the hazy weather kept people away. Usually, the popular locations in Iceland would have hundreds of people at the sites, all trying to get that one magic photo, with the ideal weather conditions.

Time

It was taken on midday, actually, in July, the daylight in July stayed almost 24h. Making this image involved some challenging environmental conditions. But the conditions also meant that it would be quicker to remove the people from the photo since there were not that many. Since it was raining when I was there, I had to ensure I didn’t get raindrops on my front filter element. Luckily the filter system I was using was the Lucroit 165mm system with visors on each side, so it kept the rain away from the lens. This allowed me to shoot when so many others had just given up.

Lighting

If you want to stop the light in midday only possible option is to have very strong ND filters. For this photo, I used 13stop Formatt Hitech filter.

Equipment

It was taken with Pentax K-1 II, DFA 15-30, plus Formatt Hitech ND13stop & GRAD3stop 165x165 filters, and a Gitzo tripod.

Inspiration

This photo was taken on my Iceland workshop in July 2018. It was a very rainy day, and we almost skipped the place because of the weather. But this was the only opportunity we had to photograph this waterfall during this workshop, so we had to make the best of it.

Editing

Yes, I did some enhancement, most of the time I spent to remove some people from the image, I did that in PS, all other job was made in LR. In LR was added jut basic adjustments.

In my camera bag

I used Pentax for almost 15 years, today I use Fuji X series cameras because I travel a lot, and Fuji giving me a very huge quality in a small package, so my travel bag becomes lighter. When I travel I usually have zum wide lens plus two wide primes, also I have 16-55 2,8 which is my most usage lense, I have few filters, 3, 6 and 13 stop plus Grad 3 stop, flash, second body some time, few batteries, small Gitzo travel tripod, battery grip. also depends of the project or job, so sometimes I have longer lenses if I need it.

Feedback

No any special advice, depends on the knowledge of the photographer. If you not very skilled the best way is to go with someone who knows the job. But everything is in practice;) If you got a few long ex shoots before, you'll be comfortable getting this kind of shot without any problem. Patient and practice.
