Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my home studio in Vancouver. It’s a self portrait because when I was starting out as a portrait photographer, I didn’t really have anyone to take photos of. So I used myself, and the remote shutter option on my camera!

Time

This was taken at night because it’s the only time a can truly make my home studio as dark as I want and get the lighting I’m looking for.

Lighting

With my self portraits, I really like to have high flash, and washed out blacks. Lots of light is key for a photo like this.

Equipment

I used my Canon 77D, with the kit lens, and a simple ball mount tripod. This was taken with a 1k fresnel light outside my window, and a front on flash mounted on my camera.

Inspiration

My goal with my self portraits is to be almost a little off putting. Something isn’t right in all of them. The photo itself can be completely normal but one thing is always out of place. I always get a kick out of people commenting on why I did something weird in my composition.

Editing

I love colour correction! It is probably one of my favourite parts of photography. To colour correct this photo, I fiddle on my computer for hours. Possibly even leaving the photo for a couple days and coming back to it.

In my camera bag

These days, I use an old Canon 5D Mark I. It’s a beast of a camera, but takes gorgeous photos. I keep several different lenses, all of which are zoom lenses. I love Tameron lenses and always have at least one. Other than that, I always keep a few different diopters for effects if the urge compels me, a flash and diffusion, and of course, several SD cards and CF cards.

Feedback

If you can have a stand in to get your lighting right and save time, do it! Grab your partner, your sibling, a coat rack with the clothes you’re going to wear. It saves time for a self portrait like this. I do recommend any aspiring portrait photographer to try their hand at a self portrait. It teaches patience, and when you’re all by yourself, I find that’s why I’m the most creative!
