Behind The Lens

Location

In my living room.

Time

3 A.M.

Lighting

I didn’t have any colored gels for this shot, so I lightly covered a lamp I had in red cloth, and did the same thing with another for the warm yellow you see in the shot. I like how the colors met and mixed.

Equipment

I used my LUMIXg7 camera to take this shot, with a 50mm lens.

Inspiration

This portrait is of my brother. We were up late at night because we’re both night owls and wanted to make something. I was bored with what I been creating up until that point and wanted a different take on my portraits. I was entering a experimental phase and wanted take make something weird, without much planning. I had a large roll of pink paper lying around and taped that up as a flat background. I had wanted to utilize the lamp in a shot for awhile, and finally did it for this. I had my brother put on a white shirt with a collar, with the thought of editing the lamp coming out from it, as his neck and head. I first shot him in the position and lighting I wanted, and then shot the lamp in the exact same spot, not moving anything. That was the easy part; finding a way for the two shots to fit together in editing is a different story.

Editing

I spent a good two hours editing this shot. I like to edit photos on my phone because it’s easier and faster for me; I use the photo editing app PicsArt. I imported the raw images into the app, the shot of my brother first, and overlaid the image of the lamp on top of it. From there, I spent time erasing the large things in the shot, like my brothers head, etc, to all of the tiny little details that needed to blend together. I was originally going to overlay the lamp on the the body and leave it, but ultimately liked how it looked with a face sticking out of it.

In my camera bag

I like to keep my bag light and simple. Most of the time I only bring what I know I will need and use. This includes: my LUMIXg7, the standard kit lens that comes with it(because it’s pretty handy), my 50mm for close-up shots, and a tripod. I also like to throw in random things that I like to use as props or to add something interesting to my shots(mirrors, books, pieces of glass to shoot through, etc.).

Feedback

The easiest way for me to create something new is to have a rough idea of what I want, and then just start doing it, I always come up with a million more things as I’m going. Sometimes it’s hard to just start. Put up a background you like, add a piece of clothing or prop you want to show off, play with some lighting; the easiest way is to start small and build. And get weird. It should be fun, and if it doesn’t work out it’s OK. If you’re interested in overlaying photographs on top of each other to make a weird portrait like this one, play around with some shots you have, there are a lot of apps that allow you to experiment.
