Behind The Lens

Location

It was the last snow in winter and my last winter in Germany! It was now or never! We all got together and my MUA did hair and makeup that morning after coffee and we all walked just outside the salon in the falling snow and took a few hundred photos before the model was turning red and the harsh conditions made us escape back to the warm salon!

Time

It was just before noon!

Lighting

I used all natural lighting! It was hard falling snow with heaney over cast clouds!

Equipment

I used a canon EOS 60D. I put the camera inside a large ziplock bank to protect it from the snow! That's all the equipment I needed!

Inspiration

It's hard to get a photoshoot in real falling snow. So given the chance I couldn't say no! Photos on a crisp and clear day are a lot more easily come by.

Editing

I use lightroom to enhance the colors of the face and snow. The score gave a natural blue color to the overall photo and lightroom made it easy as pie to correct that hue. Then I exported the image into photoshop to remove some minor blemishes and wild hairlines around the face.

In my camera bag

I normally bring strobe lights with umbrella lights for any additional lighting. But I try to just use a reflector first as it is simple and fast. I carry 3 lenses at all times. A 24mm, 85mm, both prime lens and one variable zoom lens.

Feedback

Explore you're boundaries but always protect the equipment! It doesn't need to be the most expensive thing to be good. You can make reflectors out of anything shiny and use anything as a waterproof bag that's plastic! Keep it simple!
