Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in the historic center of Lisbon, Portugal.

Time

It was about 4 PM.

Lighting

The sun was starting to set, the light passed in between two buildings and shone on the old man.

Equipment

I wanted to capture this old man without disturbing the moment. I liked the pose and the setting very much the way it was. Therefore I decided to take this photo quickly from a distance of about 12 meters. It was just a lucky try, I took about 4 photo's without him noticing me, obviously without any extra equipment...

Inspiration

We were walking in the small streets of Lisbon when I spotted this old man carefully walking to his house. It was hot and the old man was obviously tired. In the direction he was walking, I saw this very small dark alley and the sun was shining on him as he approached the alley. It was the kind of scene that depicted the end of life I guess, the old man walking home from the light into the darkness. I decided quickly to take a few photos without taking the time to think about settings or composition.

Editing

Originally this was taken as a color photo but when I saw the possibilities when I got home, I decided to edit this one as a black and white photo... I edited in Lightroom and tuned many details and light intensities. I also cropped the photo from a much larger original because I had to take the photo quickly from a distance.

In my camera bag

I don't have any equipment in my bag (yet) I am a beginning photographer and I am learning to use a camera, to look for the good light, composition and point of view. One day when I know how to use and set the camera well enough, I will start to think about a bag filled with technical things instead of the need to understand how it works first...

Feedback

If you want to take a candid photo you have to be creative. look for a place to hide behind or when there is nowhere to hide; take it "from the hip" while you look the other side, not to attrack the attention of your subject. I was standing at a far enough distance this time. I always feel a little uncomfortable photographing people I don't know, so I try to take candid photos to avoid the eye contact. Because you can't allways plan the framing when you take a few fast photos, you always have to crop such a shot, that's why you have to shoot a wider area then the result you want to achieve. Crop and edit the photo in different ways, so you can choose the best one the next day when you can have a fresh look at them!
