This photo was taken on a ranch in the middle of nowhere, Montana. I'd seen pictures of it on Instagram, and visiting it in person for the first time was everything I'd imagined it to beTime
This was actually taken at a time where I usually try and hide away with my camera - the middle of the day! I was taking photos of one of the cowboys working his horse and he wanted to ride outside instead of staying in the indoor arena, so ILighting
I usually shy away from the bright light and dark shadows that come with shooting in the middle of the day, however I decided to embrace it that day and see if I could find a way to play with it a bit. In this case, the shadow under the horse's neck in the foreground created great contrast for the buckskin's light face behind him and ended up framing it quite well.Equipment
This was shot on my Nikon D7100 with my NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5 lens.Inspiration
I absolutely love taking pictures of horses. I think there's so much expression that can be captured in a horse's face, so when shooting in an environment that has horses I will inevitably be turning my attention to them in my downtime between shooting sessions. At this point in time, the cowboy I was shooting was changing horses, so I had a chance to hang out with the rest of the herd for a bit.Editing
Having quite dark shadows from the bright midday light, I brought the shadows up and decreased the highlights to decrease the overall contrast of the image and soften it a bit. That was about it!In my camera bag
When traveling I pack the absolute bare minimum. I'm actually somewhat ashamed to admit that for this particular trip, I had such little luggage allowance after bringing two saddles with me (I'd flown out to the USA) that I even left my camera bag behind and just packed it carefully in my carry-on wrapped up in my sweater!Feedback
See if you can turn something that would usually be a weakness into a strength. I still have very little confidence shooting in harsh midday light, but having the mindset of embracing that situation is what led me to try and use the other horses as a makeshift lens hood...and I guess it kind of worked!
