Saint Basil's Cathedral, Moscow
The Cathedral of Vasily the Blessed is a very recognizable scene in Russia. It’s commonly known as Saint Basil's Cathedral and is in Red Square in Moscow. It’s now a museum and is officially known as the Cathedral of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos on the Moat. Ivan the Terrible ordered its construction to commemorate the capture of Kazan and Astrakhan. It was built from 1555 to 1561
The Soviet Union’s state atheism caused the confiscation of the church from the Russian Orthodox community. It’s been a division of the State Historical Museum since 1928. It is still a federal property of the Russian Federation. Since 1997 there have been weekly orthodox christian services in the church.
The church is a part of the Moscow Kremlin and Red Square UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Thank you, Lizzie. This one's in Moscow but you'll see plenty of onion domes in the St Petersburg area.
