Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in East Glacier Montana with a member of the Blackfoot Tribe. I remember thinking to myself ‘don’t overthink this’ I wanted perfect exposure and I took several shots to make sure I got it right.

Time

This was my first shoot and we met at dawn. It was so cold I worried I wouldn’t be able to handle my camera. About 30-40 minutes after sunrise this shot was taken.

Lighting

The sun around the clouds gave off the perfect ambience that I didn’t know I wanted for this image. Soft yet bright, warm but not too much, with enough foreboding of the clouds to impart a chill in the air.

Equipment

I shot this handheld on a Canon 5Ds with a 70-200 lens With a UV filter at f/10.

Inspiration

I have been interested in the Native American history since I was little. I wanted to portray strength and a way of life. I wanted to bring history to life.

Editing

I took 2 photos and overlaid the image. I masked the buffalo in the clouds and lightened the opacity to make it almost invisible. To merge them, I did separate color corrections. One with the ground to bring back some color and contrast and a polarization correction to the sky. To bring them together I added a global adjustment to the warmth that changed with the individual edits.

In my camera bag

My bag is full to capacity with a 135, a 24-55, 70-200 and 16-35 lenses. I have two small pouches of filters, extra batteries and memory cards and of course my Canon 5Ds.

Feedback

Be patient. This image, while taken in a day, took a few weeks to come to life with post processing. Don’t get to hasty when you are trying to create a story with your image. Patience is the key.
