Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken off the Revillagigedo Islands (Socorro Island), a group of 4 volcanic islands in the Pacific Ocean off Mexico.

Time

We were diving morning, afternoon and evening. This photo was taken in the morning with the morning light providing perfect photography conditions.

Lighting

It was early morning. When the morning sun is shining through clear water, it is absolutely the best time for photography.

Equipment

Nikon 7000, fish eye lens, Nauticam housing with Inon strobes.

Inspiration

These giant mantas are beautiful and huge. They were very curious and enjoyed swimming above us in the bubbles of our expired air. I thought the contrast with this photographer really demonstrated their size and how close they were. They are amazing animals in the wild but happy to share the ocean with a few divers.

Editing

Photo processed in Lightroom, converted to monotone by reducing the colour sliders until it looked right. Contrast increased and some backscatter removed with the spot tool.

In my camera bag

For underwater photography - Nikon 7000, wide angle lens, fish eye lens, macro lens, with appropriate ports to accommodate the lenses. Nauticam housing and Inon strobes. Will also use a Sony RX 100 3 compact camera in Nauticam housing.

Feedback

We sailed from Mexico (Cabo San Lucas) to get to this site about 24 hours later. The islands have a military base but are otherwise uninhabited. You need to be an experienced diver and have experience with your photography gear. These are wild animals and need to be respected. They do have the potential to harm. Good diving skills are essential.
