Behind The Lens

Location

Downtown Greensboro, NC, US

Time

Mid-afternoon

Lighting

For me, the lighting made the shot come alive. Without the angled shadows, it would have been a very flat, boring shot.

Equipment

Nikon D300, Nikkor 55-200 zoom

Inspiration

The angles created by the shadows and the highlighted structure itself caught my eye. I was fascinated by the way the angles changed in the composition as I moved from left to right until I had it just where I liked it.

Editing

I did little post-production work on it. I opened the shadows just a little.

In my camera bag

Nikon D300 with an assortment of zoom lenses (10mm-400mm), table-top tripod, assortment of filters & extra batteries

Feedback

If you have the luxury of viewing a shot at different times of day, do so. This would have likely been an unusable shot at any other time of day since the diagonal shadows were, for me, what made the shot. Understand that light and shadows play a drastic part in forming shape and that those factors typically change continually throughout the day. Shoot more in the early morning and late afternoon.
