Behind The Lens

Location

Thus is taken in the gardens of Lismore Castle in Lismore Co Waterford Ireland

Time

I took this at about 3pm. It was one of the last shots I took during a maternity shoot with a friend of mine and I knew when I saw it on the camera that I had what I was hoping for

Lighting

We had no choice but to do this shoot in the middle of the day. I chose the gardens knowing I would be able to find shade in there but I was still battling with highlights for most of the shoot. Thankfully the clouds arrived in time for this shot

Equipment

This is taken with a Nikon D750. My lens was a 35mm Sigma Art 1.4

Inspiration

My subject was very nervous about the shoot. She had a lot of body confidence issues because she was 38 weeks pregnant with her first child. I wanted to capture her in a way that would show her how beautiful she really was and so that she would have a lovely memory to look back on. I had her lie down in the grass with the daisies and shot a number of angles and perspectives till I had exactly what I envisioned. I added the daisies in her hair by seeing how beautiful they looked all around her. I was checking the playback and getting ideas as I was shooting.

Editing

Yes I edited this in Lightroom. I toned down the greens using the yellow slider.

In my camera bag

In my bag is my Nikon F750, a Nikkor 85mm 1.8g, Nikkor 50mm 1.8g, Sigma Art 35mm 1.4 and a Sigma Art 20mm 1.4. I've recently started shooting analog so I also have a Nikon F100

Feedback

If you have a vision then don't be afraid to keep snapping and trying different angles and even different lenses till you see your vision come to life. Spend a bit of time walking around your subject to see which orientation and angle works best. Sometimes the vision may only come to you as your shooting. It's a good idea to keep checking your camera playback to see how the shot looks and how you might need to adjust your composition.
