Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in a friend's home studio.

Time

Afternoon

Lighting

Lighting was a large overhead beauty dish, with a large silver reflector underneath. Simple, yet effective lighting.

Equipment

Nikon, 85mm lens w/ 2 strobes. One as main and background light.

Inspiration

Really the models inspired me. I had some ideas going in on what I wanted to shoot, but most of those were forgotten as the shoot progressed. The inspiration was their natural beauty, and total ease with each other and being in front of the camera. The subjects of this shot really made this work. It was really a right place at the right time type of moment. We had limited clothing options to do fashion shots, so I decided to give these more of a portrait feel. It wasn't hard, because both women were absolute naturals in front of the camera. They had worked together before, and it really became obvious right away. There was none of the awkwardness that can often come across in doubles poses. I like the difference in the models, as well. Their different skin tones really add contrast to the image.

Editing

I kept the retouching subtle, so skin texture was still visible, giving the shot a more natural look, I wanted to keep it light and not too obvious. The idea was to emphasize their natural beauty, not erase it, as some retouching does that is overly heavy handed.

In my camera bag

Not a lot, just the essentials and alway a lot of batteries. Never enough batteries. I really go with one lens for the shoot, sometmes I will switch. Overall, I use 2 lenses on a Nikon D850. I pretty much always bring light on location, as well. I like the bump in contrast and color that is harder to achieve with just natural light.

Feedback

Get great models, always. I know it's tempting to shoot your friends, but if you want to be taken seriously, you need to work with professionals. Experienced models make your life a lot easier.
