Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken on a trip to Italy with my girlfriend. We stayed in a cheap Airbnb in Florence by the Duomo. That cheap Airbnb just so happened to have an amazing rooftop terrace overlooking the square and the rest of the city. I snapped this photo from the rooftop. Airbnb for the win.

Time

This was taken a few years ago, right at sunset. My girlfriend and I were sitting on the rooftop taking the sunset in as the sky blew up with orange. I've increased the saturation a bit on this photo but the sky looked incredible.

Lighting

I really liked how as the sunset over the horizon it created a haze over the mountains in the background. They weren't super far away and looked much different an hour before I snapped this shot, but this haze added a layer of depth that I enjoyed.

Equipment

Canon 5dmiii and 27-70mm at 50mm.

Inspiration

Just the moment. We were sitting on the rooftop enjoying the sunset and the sky opened up with an intense orange/reddish glow. I'm lucky I had my camera on me.

Editing

I tweaked the colors and increased the saturation a bit. Standard editing such as dropping highlights and increasing shadows to get a more dreamy feel.

In my camera bag

It really depends on what I'm shooting. If I'm doing a wedding I'll pack heavy and bring everything I own. If I'm traveling or going out for fun I'll try and only pack what I think I'll need. I'll always have at least one body - either my Canon or Sony and one to two lenses. My goto lens would be 27-70mm, and if I want to bring another it will usually be my 16-24mm for wide shots. I usually leave my 70-200mm home given the size and weight but its my guilty pleasure if I have it on me. It's just so crisp.

Feedback

Be in the moment instead of trying to make a moment. There's nothing special about this photo. Anyone could have captured it. It's the memory I have when I took it - I'll never be in that place at that time with my girlfriend again. We're since engaged and it was one of the bigger trips we went on together. I have tons of great memories from it, and this image means more to me than you as a viewer. That's what makes photography beautiful.
