The photo was taken during some test shots with a new face in the studio.Time
Well because it's a studio shot, the time of the day doesn't matter, but what matters it's how you use the lights to express what you want.Lighting
Regarding the light, this image is shot with one light source (studio strobe) about 45 degrees angle on my left (right of the model - as you can also see by the shadows on the model face). A reflector on the right side, that catches some of the light source and returns it back on model so the shadows will be softer on the model's face.Equipment
Usually studio portraits I shoot with a 50mm lens with any camera (this one was shot with my old nikon d200), a studio strobe and a reflector.Inspiration
We were doing test shots and I was also studying the black and white soft portraits, so this image was inspired by my curiosity to learn more of the wonders of photography and also to study model's expressions.Editing
Yes, I did some post-processing, softening the tones, desaturation and a bit of contrast to harden the shadows where they are the strongest, so in this way the contour of the model is more effective.In my camera bag
My usual equipment it's a camera, a flash, a fix lens (love the nifty fifty) and some zoom lenses.Feedback
Portraits are also an art of making the model feel good and opened to express. As technique this photo was made with a studio strobe with an umbrella on one side of the model to spread the light more even, also a reflector on the other side to soften the shadows on the side where there is no light source. Most of the image beside the technical part is the freedom of the model to play with expressions so at the end of the day when you see the images, the model and yourself are surprised to see that the work you've put trough is paying of in a good image.
