Raw guts and power. Boxing in beautiful black and white. Nothing like it.

Behind The Lens

Location

At a boxing event in Bruges/Belgium where I was asked to document the action packed evening.

Time

Late evening.

Lighting

Only the available LED-light is used at these boxing events and as one can imagine, the use of a flash light could blind the boxers wich would be unrespectfull.

Equipment

I use the mirrorless Fuji system consisting of two bodies, the XPRO2 and the XT2 and a range of lenses. Depending of what type of image I want to capture, I use totally different lenses, like my little fast and sharp 23mm lens, the flexible 16-55mm zoomlens, the 50-140mm for longer distance candits or portraits and the 10-24mm gives interesting results too! No flash as it would be unrespectfull towards the boxers and I believe it's forbidden too.

Inspiration

Like one can imagine, one wants to capture the action and the technique of the boxers. But I want to go a step further, I try to capture their fear, the pain, the overall vibe of the sport, this including the refs, the trainers and the public too.

Editing

When I have chosen the better images, I crop and straighten them where needed. I only use lightroom, wich is more than enough to adjust the dynamics, the lighting, shadows and colors. Sometimes there is a need to have some noise reduction as I tend to use high ISO settings for these light condition.

In my camera bag

As little as possible actually. I have learned the hard way that having too much gear around is not only heavy and bulky, but fooling around and changing lenses takes time and can be risky too. Specially in hectic envirement of boxing events. For the boxing events I tend to use two bodies, both with totally diffent lenses.

Feedback

I have learned that having contact and respect for the boxers, the trainers and refs only helps getting better results. One has to experiment with the ISO (and other) settings so the shutterspeeds are fast enough to get sharp areas in combination with some motion blur so one gets a feel of the action. Most of the time I underexpose the images because I like a dark background and no over exposed bodies and faces.
