Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in an old squat in Heerlen in the Netherlands. It was a large hall with bar and an upper floor. I took this photo in a very small kitchen of the bar. The space was just big enough to accommodate my photo lamp. At that time, 3 or 4 people lived in this old squat, who lived there as an anti-squat. One of the women who lived here was a friend of mine and she made this property available to me for a photo shoot with these 2 ladies.

Time

The photo shoot took place in the evening. I took this photo at the end of the shoot at 10:30pm. The shoot had only started around 8pm as the ladies in the photo had to come from France and were delayed en route from their 400km ride. I myself live 20 minutes away from this building.

Lighting

For the exposure of this photo I used one quadrangular softbox with a 400watt studio flash. Lined up on the left of the ladies.

Equipment

I made this my old full frame camera the Canon Mark II with the wide angle lens Canon 17-40mm F4 at an aperture of 5.6 and an ISO content of 100. Hand-held from a low point of view. I used the low angle and wide angle lens to create a distorted view of the perspective. And to emphasize their long legs and give them more depth by bending them forward towards the lens. The expressions on their faces enhance the look of the photo. To make them look like wild and crazy girls (which they really are)

Inspiration

The reason for this photo is as follows: The ladies in these photos are sisters who live in South Africa where they still speak old Dutch. The ladies together form a punk/rock music band and were on a world tour through Europe in 2018. During a concert of these ladies called: The Soapgirls. I was hired as a photographer by the organizer of the concert in Cafe De Meister in Geleen in the south of the Netherlands. In this pop stage I was the house photographer of all events. While photographing these ladies I fell in love with their music and appearance. After the show I got to know the ladies back stage. I said that I really liked their music and that I would photograph the CD cover of their next album. Ultimately this happened. A year later they were touring Europe again and I made an appointment with them for this photo shoot. The photos from this shoot were used for their new CD that was released a few months later. It was cool working with these ladies and to this day we are still in touch. Unfortunately, they were no longer able to tour due to the covid-19 measures. But as soon as it is possible and ladies come back from Africa to the Netherlands, we will make a new appointment.

Editing

I did the post-processing of the photo in 2 steps. First I edited the RAW file in Adobe Lightroom to adjust exposure and crop the photo. I then edited the exported JPEG file in Adobe Photoshop to smooth out some imperfections and sharpen the eyes. Other than that, I haven't changed much about this photo. The adjustments are minimal. Looking back at the edit right now, I would have done it differently right now. And that's not wrong, but a sign of development the post-processing. Despite this, I still find it a striking photo and I am still satisfied with the result.

In my camera bag

That time i use my Canon 5D Mark II, nowadays i use a Canon 6D Mark II. In my camera bag I have a standard backup camera, the Canon 7D. As lenses I have at this shoot the Canon 24-70mm F2.8, the Canon 50mm F1.4, the Canon 17-40mm F4. And on this shoot I had a manual fisheye lens with me. The equipment I have with me differs per photo shoot. I take what I think I need. I try never to take too much, but not too little either.

Feedback

Take a photo by feel. The camera and lens are just the tools. Go with the flow and communicate with the models and come up with a photo that makes you feel good. Make sure that the photo gives you stimulation and exudes certain tension. Don't be afraid to deviate from the standard rules that apply in photography. Dare, act and be crazy.
