This bold brand portrait was actually taken outdoors in a driveway with a black fabric backdrop and tow speedlights in waterproof baggies. I had an assistant spraying the model with water as she focused on my direction.Time
I remember it was a chilly October morning and I actually was able to attach the water hose to the kitchen sink supply to give us warmish water. Otherwise the shoot might have caused a very cold outcome!Lighting
I needed edgy side lighting and it needed to be triggered remotely so I set up to Nikon speedlights on each side and put them in Ziplock bags. I used the flat supplied base plates to set them right on the ground to give it a strong low sidleight with no modifiersEquipment
This image was shot with a Nikon D750 85mm nikkor @ f/8, 1/1600th second.Inspiration
I was inspired by some great work by photographer Benjamin Von Wong and knew right away what Image I wanted to create.Editing
The image was processed in Adobe Lightroom and I used black and white conversion to convey the power of the contrast and detail. I like using the adjustment brush to brush on areas of sharpness and detail in my images. In my camera bag
My gear changes depending on what I'm shooting. for portraits I carry a 24-70mm f/2.8 and my trusted 85mm 1.8. I love the compression and sharpness of the 85mm and I chose the 1.8 over the 1.4 lens because of it's very light weight and portability. The camera I was shooting was the D750, In my opinion the best portrait camera (DSLR) that Nikon ever produced. These days I shoot with a Z9 and absolutely love the new mirroless features. Especially eye tracking. I shoot handheld whenever possible because I get into some rather contorted positions to get the shot. In this case I was lying in the water in the driveway while shooting right at ground level.Feedback
If this image inspires you, I would encourage you to try this out for yourself. To create an image like this a lot of elements need to come together, so if you don't get it perfect the first go, keep trying. Do use gear that can take a bit of water and keep those flashes dry!!
