I took this photo from the balcony outside my living room. There was a very tall acacia tree in an open area opposite my living room. I was startled to see these two young raccoons sitting on a large limb since it was late morning and raccoons are nocturnal. I grab my camera as quickly as a could. The raccoons obviously saw me and posed. I was lucky. Right after I took this and a few other photos, they left,Time
It was late morning on an overcast day, August 12, 2012Lighting
Because it was overcast I did not have to worry about harsh shadows. For me the lighting was perfect. IOSO 400 f 5.6Equipment
My camera was a Canon SX 150 IS. No flash was used since I did not want to startle the raccoons. Camera was hand held - no tripod.Inspiration
How can you not be inspired to take such a photo. It is rare to see raccoons at that time of day, right outside my balcony. I knew it would be a good photo. I did not realize how photogenic they were. I took others but this one was the best.Editing
The major post-processing I did was to convert this to black and white. There are others in color with minimal post-processing.In my camera bag
I am an amateur and I do not carry any fancy equipment. I have my camera, small tripod, extra battery, lens hood, and that's about it.Feedback
Be alert and expect the unexpected. Don't hesitate to take the photo when you see something different or special. Digital photos do not cost anything unlike actual film which costs to develop. Have your camera handy if possible. When taking photos of animals, be quiet and cautious. Try not to disturb or frighten them.
