Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Ladakh on my way to Pangong lake. The whole journey from main city of Ladakh to Pangong lake was mesmerising. Right from barren lands, grey mountains, steep slopes, pine tree forests, grasslands, and animals was just like watching a movie in reality. Closing eyes for a moment seemed like missing a view which could not be seen again.

Time

Probably one of my favourite images. I remember waking up at around 4:30 in the morning as we had to get ready and leave early to reach Pangong lake, Ladakh. On our way to the lake I sat on the passenger seat to have a full view and not miss a single chance to click something that left me in an awe. That morning was so calm and serene with soft light. It was a long drive of about 7 to 8 hours that day to reach out destination. Almost towards the end our journey through the empty roads around mid day, I saw these soldiers walking. Empty roads, through the mountains wearing forest camouflage pattern dress also called as“Jungle Dress” which they only wear on Fridays. I got luck that day as it was a Friday and I got this frame to click. This picture was taken on 26 June 2015 at 12:35 AM.

Lighting

The picture was shot in its natural element. The sunlight was soft through the clouds and the fog. This image was taken in a moving van, nothing to control or arrange.

Equipment

This was shot on Canon EOS 550D, F number:f/5.6, Exposure time:1/640, Exposure program:Manual, Focal length:35mm, No other equipment was involved.

Inspiration

Soldiers and nature have had been my inspiration ever since I was little. I always saw this either on television or movie screens which got me into thinking about how is it in real life. Let alone the nature but the soldiers in this picture are my real inspiration for this picture and the play of nature was a BONUS. Their dedication towards the country, hard work and the way they have put their lives forward for the country grew my respect for them even more. I always wanted to either get clicked with them or click their picture of them ever since I was little, but was scared of their personality which came out so strong to me that I could never ask for a picture. It was all just out of respect. Life gave a chance still. On my trip to Ladakh it seemed like my dream came true. I saw soldiers for real and that too in their natural element doing what they do for us. I was so excited and had no idea that I will get to click them like this. Yes they are not into some kind of fight or war but the surrounding that they are living in leaving every luxury and life style behind just so that we all can enjoy it. This is one in a million shot.

Editing

Usually I do tweak pictures a little bit here and there. In this picture all I did was to develop the raw image and play with the contrast just about 2 points. A little bit of alignment since this picture was taken in a moving van. Irrespective there has been no such major post processing done in this picture.

In my camera bag

I am just a passionate photographer who likes to capture the everything that I see around which could help me imagine or recreate and revisit moments I lived for once. The first thing that I pack is my camera 80D along with canon 18-135 mm lens which is handy and allows me to take zoom in or out shots. Other lenses which I carry are canon 50mm, canon 75-250mm lenses with filters. Extra battery pack and memory cards. 1 Yo pro Tripod. All these equipments are light in weight, fits in my bag pack and easy to carry.

Feedback

The place you are about to travel to check the weather conditions as this will help you understand the kind of lighting which will be available. For places like Ladakh climate changes drastically any moment. It is best to carry equipments which will allow you to capture the moment easily. Fixed lenses could cause some problems making you loose the moment if you are on the go. One of the major feature of a landscape photographer is to be patient and wait for the right time, specially at such places. Be prepared to accept and view the diversity of nature: colours, light, elements of nature. In that moment we generally happen to find what we are looking for. Sunrise and sunsets are the key moments, the clouds and winds play the major role so just be patient and plan ahead with the equipments.
