Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken in a hidden cove surrounded by towering Jurassic granite cliffs known as the Pinnacles in Victoria, Australia.

Time

To capture the golden glow of the sunlight and highlight the cliff textures this image was taken in the hour before sunset.

Lighting

The direction of light was side on from the right and this was perfect to provide soft golden highlighting of the cliff textures contrasting with a darker cove.

Equipment

This was taken using a Pentax 645z camera on tripod with a 28-45 mm lens at 28 mm. The settings were ISO109, F16, 81 seconds exposure. A ten stop neutral density filter was used to obtain the long exposure.

Inspiration

This hidden cove is not often photographed and can only be reached at lower tides. My vision for this image was to highlight the lost world charm of these cliffs by contrasting their textures through golden soft light and ethereal clouds and water.

Editing

Editing was done mainly in Photoshop. Whilst a lot of the soft golden light, blurred water and cloud movement were naturally present in the raw image there was still a need to build contrast selectively via curves layers through luminosity masks as well as adding a little Orton effect and some accentuation to the textures and the cloud movement. A little bit of dodge and burn was also used to balance light and shadow.

In my camera bag

If I need to hike far to a location I often take a canon 5D4 camera and 16-35 mm zoom lens and a few nd filters, polariser and tripod. If necessary I will sometimes also use an ultra wide 12 mm Laowa lens or a canon EF f2.8 70-200 ii for Tele shots. My other camera is a Pentax 645z with 28-45 mm lens. This is a high megapixel medium format camera and I often use this when I don’t need ultra wide focal length. Tripods and ballheads are RRS 34 L and a lighter one for hiking.

Feedback

I think an important issue for similar captures is the importance of side lighting during the golden hours to highlight textures and provide a soft ethereal feel to the image. Also it is worth considering the long exposure to provide cloud drama and smooth unwanted details in the water.
