Behind The Lens

Location

This is one of my favourite recent images and the result of a studio shoot with my best friend, the amazing Luke Brooke who is a professional modern Air-ship designer and a world authority on the subject. He also adores dressing up and being photographed. His look is normally androgynous.

Time

Taken at the Ray Bradbury studio in the afternoon.

Lighting

Softbox front left and speedlight high rhs behind the subject to make sure the rim of the hat was lit. Shooting someone in black, coat, shirt; trousers, shoes (actually high heeled ankle boots) and hat - against a black background was a hell of a challenge - but that's part of the fun.

Equipment

I shoot with a 9 year old Canon 550d using fairly basic lenses. This was a 50mm prime. Studio flask lighting. Hand held.

Inspiration

I've long wanted to get Luke into a studio and I have to say it was the best fun! I like fairly dramatic shots when I get the chance, that evoke some sort of emotion - even if it makes the viewer feel slightly uncomfortable. I wanted this to be more than a flat portrait and to show something more of the intriguing character of Luke.. I went for a Dickensian feel as it suited him and the styling. I took up photography 9 years ago following the death of my husband who had MS. I guess it saved me in a way. I enjoy that I get the results that I do with the kit I have.. As Ansel Adams said "the most important part of a camera is the 12 inches behind it!".

Editing

Processed in lightroom and photoshop.

In my camera bag

Canon 550d, 18-55mm, 50mm prime, 55-250mm and 28-135mm Canon lenses. Canon speedlight.Spare batteries and sd cards.

Feedback

I mainly shoot people - whether it's studio, natural light or street. With black against black like this shot I would make sure that there is subtle back lighting.
