Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken on Iceland when we tried to walk close to the wild horses to touch them.

Time

I remember, that I asked my brother to stop the car on the road, and I told him,, please just one shot with the horses, and we can go forward,, He stopped and we started to walk closer and closer... My girlfriend easily touched one of these two beautiful animals. We thought that it will run away, but nothing... I hadn't too much time to take this shot, but I think I was in the right place right time. The weather extremely windy on Iceland at the beginning of April, it is visible on the head of the horses, so this photo was taken at 2019.04.12

Lighting

On this image, I used natural lights and I set the camera to F/6.3 with 1/160 sec exposure time. The ISO was set to 100.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D3300 with a Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 55-200 mm 1:4-5,6G ED VR II lens

Inspiration

I planed in my head, when I will be on Iceland, I will take photos with the puffins, with whales and great shots in the ice cave, but due to the weather condition, we didn't see any of these miracles. So when I was in the car, and suddenly I saw these two beautiful animals, I asked my brother to stop the car to take one shot.

Editing

I corrected the contrast and the brightness of the image in Lightroom.

In my camera bag

In my backpack, the first main thing is my camera, a Nikon D3300, and I have 4 lenses. A Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G which is a kit lens, but I am using it approximately 10 years ago. My second lens is a Nikon 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED-IF AF-S DX VR. This is a telephoto lens so I used this to take a close picture with the horses. The third lens is a Nikon AF-P DX 10-20mm 4,5-5,6 G - I love to use this lens for landscape photography. Finally, my favourite lens is the AF-S DX Nikkor 35mm f/1.8, which has nice bokeh and it is similar to what I see with my eyes. It works fine in dark condition. The other thing what is a DJI MAVIC PRO and a Zhiyun Smooth M, because sometimes I use my Huawei P20 PRO to take videos, and it is a great gimbal for phones. I also have in my bag a plus battery, a remote release, a wireless mobile adapter, because the Nikon D3300 has no wifi connection, so with this gadget can connect with my phone, to make time-lapse. I have 3 extra memory cards, and a Rode Video Micro. Sometimes is in my bag a Vivitar flash and a trigger, but rarely use it, so many times I leave at home. Inside of the bag always is a Manfrotto BeFree, because it is small and if I have to use a tripod easily and quickly can set it up.

Feedback

The first main thing is to buy a ticket to Iceland and there you can find these kinds of wild horses. Some parts of the island can find different animals, like puffins, or geese with interesting heads... Iceland is like a strategy game, so if you will drive you can see different environments, green with vulcan rocks, black sand, yellow fields, snow mountains. So the colours are changing always. My advice if you travel there after winter, search the horses on grassy fields, on the yellow map. :)
