Behind The Lens

Location

I have taken this photo on a photo trip in Costa Rica last year.

Time

It was about noon, we have just returned from frog photoshooting when friend of our guide presented this big beetle.

Lighting

Light in noon time is not so good for photography. So we have to find some place in the shade to get more ambient light.

Equipment

I have used my Canon 5DmkIV and Canon 300/2.8L IS II USM lens and Gitzo tripod. The lens is not so common for this kind of picture, but I wanted shallow DOF and more pleasing background, so I have used this longer focal length.

Inspiration

I wanted to show the beetle little from bellow, to better express, how big it is.

Editing

Just some basic tweaks in Lightroom.

In my camera bag

For this king of photo trips I have i my bag bodies: Canon 5DmkIV and as a backup Canon 7DmkII, lenses Canon 300/2.8L IS II USM with extenters, Canon 100/2.8L for macro, Canon 16-35/4 for landscape and sometimes Canon 100-400/4-5.6L IS USM II as a universal light zoom.

Feedback

Find some place with ambient light. Try different angles, lenses. Watch for the background.
