Behind The Lens

Location

I was after a forest setting that matched the brown earthy tones that the model was wearing, the models mother (also a local photographer) knew of a location that was a little out of Ulverstone, Tasmania. It matched the coloring perfectly and added so much to the mood of the photo shoot.

Time

The photo was taken later in the day to take advantage of the sun lower in the sky to give that warmth through the trees as it was quite a dense forest. It was eerily quite in there and set the tone for the emotion in the photos that she was alone and building the strength to carry on. The photo was taken on September 22, 2018 at 3:12pm.

Lighting

I wanted this to be a dark and moody shoot so it's all natural light, it was about representing the inner battle we all go through and the strength it takes just to move forward it wasn't about being perfect just raw.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon 6D Mark II with a 50mm prime lens.

Inspiration

I had wanted to do a steampunk inspired shoot for a while and when I approached the model she jumped on board. I had the headpiece created especially for this as it was what I had in my mind when I pictured this shoot. It eventually evolved into so much more for both of us when she was suffering from cruel bullying after becoming the Australian Supermodel of the Year Teen Runner Up 2018. The photo shoot turned into something to give her the power back and show she is stronger in spite of all she has endured. We all fight hidden battles but we are stronger than we give ourselves credit and that's why in this series of images it isn't just showing how strong you are it's showing the weaknesses that you overcame and without those there is no strength.

Editing

I did very little post editing, I mainly edited in light-room and fixed the lighting to how I wanted it and upped the brown tones that I wanted to showcase especially on the headpiece.

In my camera bag

I always have in my bag my Canon 50mm prime lens, Canon 6D Mark II body, Canon 75-300mm zoom lens and Mitakon CREATOR 35mm and a wireless speed light. I also have random bits and pieces such as my lens cleaner, hairbands/pins, pen, notepad, band aids, and a couple pegs - while these are random items they have all been useful in some way or another, you would be surprised how random items can become handy when you need a quick fix while on shoot these are the most versatile I have found.

Feedback

A lot of planning went into this shoot, be prepared to invest in it, from small details in the outfit to the emotion and reason behind the photos, collaborate with your model ask what the shoot means to them, explain your feeling behind it. This worked out so much better than I ever dreamed just by working together we made this into something that has real meaning behind it and the model was able to truly express what was needed. I have received many inspiring messages from a variety of people who each have taken something from these photos but each one was relatively the same it made them feel they can get through their hard times, it put a new perspective on things for them.
