Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in front of a black backdrop at the basement of a friends home. I don't have a dedicated studio yet, and since he is a clothing designer and this shoot was for his collection, we shot this inside his home.

Time

This was done at night probably around 7 or 8 PM. We had just wrapped shooting a music video with the same backdrop and easily transitioned to photo shooting, the adrenaline from the music video definitely helped bring character specifically to this shot.

Lighting

I mainly used a beauty dish for lighting of the subject that was attached to a wireless flash system. I wanted to make sure the exposure from the lighting did not reveal too much. I wanted it to be a rough cut from the model to the background (Complete exposure to complete darkness) Th goal was to eliminate any gray areas or anything that would be revealed if the light was too bright.

Equipment

Canon EOS 70D, Aperture f/10?ISO 100?Shutter 1/160?Focal Length 23/1, Tripod, Wireless system connected to beauty dish for remote flash.

Inspiration

Sometimes with inspiration, you can come into it shooting with specifics of what you would like as the outcome, then come out with something more evolved which ends up being a beautiful piece of artwork. I came into this shoot looking for it to be something highlighting fashion for consumers for purchase, design and modeling. Never would I have imagined that this photo would have evolved to something that is admired for something more. At best, I only expected this photo be something you might see in a catalogue, I'm pretty excited others see this photo for something a little more.

Editing

The photo was originally shot to highlight the fashion the model is wearing. So during post processing, it was minor digital enhancements done to the clothing (unnecessary wrinkles, loose strings, etc.) I also made sure to fix any imperfections of the backdrop since it was a cloth backdrop. Also I did some white balancing, and color corrections.

In my camera bag

I usually carry a Canon 70D and Tamron SP 85mm F/1.8 Prime Di VC USD as mentioned before. I have my Sigma 18-35mm F/1.8 Prime lens, a Canon 50mm F/1.8 STM Prime Lens, Canon 18-55mm F/3.5 lens, a Canon 55-250mm F/4 lens, a [pro]master wireless transmitter and receiver, for both my [pro]master TTL 200SL speedlight and [pro]master TTL Bounce Flash FL1, a bunch of AAA and AA batteries, 5 SD cards, wall charger and camera batteries, multiple variable ND filters for my lenses, lens cleaners, and last but not least my business cards.

Feedback

As mentioned before, I came into this shoot looking to create something basic (fashion catalogue) and pushed myself (and my model) to make sure to add some feeling, passion, and emotion into each shot. Even though the shoot was for something basic, I'm glad that I didn't come in with a basic mindset and that I was able to capture passion in this shoot as well regardless of what the usage and final result was supposed to be. So my advice to any one shooting something similar is, no matter what you're shooting, please show some passion, some emotion, some feel into your shooting. Never come in with a basic mindset. Push your limits, don't be afraid to try something new. Photography is a lot of trial and error, but if you take the risk, you may come up with a masterpiece.
