Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken during my trip to New Zealand, we had a rental car to drive around and explore the southern island. We made some stops here and there and during one of those stops, this picture was taken.

Time

It was taken I think in the early afternoon, the sun was harsh and bright, there was no wind and hardly any clouds in the sky. I remember it being hot and quite busy, allot of tourist busses stopped shortly after we arrived and had parked our car. The tourist busses didn't stay long so I had all the time and space in the world to find that perfect spot to take some pictures without having to worry about anyone walking into the frame.

Lighting

To be honest, I was struggling a bit with this one. The sunlight was very harsh and for some reason I just have a very hard time taking a good photo with such hard light conditions. So to me, this was a great opportunity to learn. I think I did a good job, I captured the all the different elevations and relief in the mountains like I wanted. And I'm really happy how the colours of that incredible blue sky and golden grass are represented in my photo. You'd think this photo is heavily edited, but I promise you, it is not.

Equipment

I used my trusty Canon 6D, Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM and that's it.

Inspiration

To be honest, I didn't plan out this shot. It was my first time visiting New Zealand and we just went out to explore, stopping at places to take a break or to admire the view. I just took my camera with me almost everywhere, looked at the landscape and tried to capture it's beauty. Like capturing a memory, or at least for me, because when I look back at this photo I can still feel the blaring sun on my skin and hear the chirping of insects in the grass.

Editing

I didn't really post process this photo that much, I tweaked the contrast a little, turned down some highlights and that was basically it. The place where this was taken was already breathtaking by itself and the skies are so blue in New Zealand it looks almost fake. So I didn't really have to do that much.

In my camera bag

Canon 6d, 50mm lens, macro lens, all-round lens, remote, 10 stops Hoya ND filter, a lens cleaning cloth and some snacks and drinks. Depending on what kind of photo's I'm going to take I'll take my tripod with me or not.

Feedback

Go out there, explore your surroundings and take your camera with you, because you never know what you might encounter. And even if you don't get the shot you wanted, just view it as practice. And when you're taking pictures and you have the time, take your time. Oh and pack some drinks and snacks if you're going on a long walk or drive.
