Location
This photo was taken from a campsite which is right on the beach at Castlepoint in the Wairarapa, a four hour drive north of Wellington, New Zealand's capital city.Time
I'm a night owl so it is most unusual for me to be up before the sun! The silver lining to having a restless night is that I peeked out the window at just the right time to wake my husband, grab our cameras and race down to the shore to witness a most dramatic sunrise. It is autumn in New Zealand and often very windy at Castlepoint so I wanted to take advantage of a fine and very calm morning. The photo was taken on 18 March 2019 at 6.09 am.Lighting
The lighting is simply the natural light from the sunrise. Fortunately the campsite lights were behind me and far enough away to not not impact the photograph.Equipment
I just have a "point and shoot" compact camera. It is a Canon Powershot SX710 HS. No other equipment was utilised.Inspiration
I love sunrises and sunsets so am always trying to capture these moments. The silhouette is totally unposed. It is my husband who just happened to walk in front of me and then stop to contemplate where on the horizon the sun would actually appear. I knew he could move off at any moment (he was not aware I was taking his photo) so I quickly fired off three shots just in the nick of time.Editing
I haven't done any post-processing, the photo is exactly as it was taken. In my camera bag
The benefit of having a compact camera is that I don't have to carry extra lenses etc so it fits easily into a handbag. I always make sure I carry a spare fully charged battery as it's not uncommon for me to need more than one battery a day, especially when on holiday!Feedback
I'm a total amateur at photography so the only advice I would offer is to make the most of the opportunities that arise to capture whatever grabs your attention. Sunrise and sunset photos can be enhanced by focusing on a feature in the landscape, whether in foreground or background, and apply the rule of thirds. And keep shooting as the light, array of colours and moving clouds can change the skyscape minute by minute.
