Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Healesville Sanctuary an excellent place to visit and encounter animals quite close.

Time

I took this photo in the early afternoon.

Lighting

There was nice natural, filtered light provided by the trees and the birds enclosure. No flash used. I wouldn't use a flash to photograph birds or animals.

Equipment

I used a Canon 6D Mark 2, hand held.

Inspiration

Rainbow Lorikeets are stunning birds, so vivid and vibrant. I am always inspired to photograph them be it in this occasion at a Sanctuary or in the wild. Their colours just captivate me.

Editing

Being only an amateur photographer I still have much to learn, including editing. I only know the basics so only the basic were applied in Lightroom. Basically just cropping, adding a little bit of texture and added a watermark.

In my camera bag

I tend to wear my camera on a large crossbody strap and use a 300mm lens if at a Sanctuary or zoo, such as this occasion. If I know I'm going to visit wetlands or where animals are placed further away I'll pack a tripod with monopod option and either a 400mm or 600mm or both. I'll use a polarised filter if harsh sunlight.

Feedback

Bird photography can be hard. Visiting Bird Sanctuaries is a great way to practice as the birds are used to people so much quieter. If out in nature, sit and wait, be respectful of your surrounds. If you don't nail an amazing shot don't be too hard on yourself, just try again. The main thing is to appreciate and respect nature and don't forget what you see can often far outweigh what is caught on film.
