Contrast-rich portraits with Zu Ivanova (Model Mayhem # 4269747).
One hard flash to light the model, a second flash for the white background. A black background was further behind the model, not catching light.

Location
For this shoot, I met with Zu Ivanova (model mayhem # 4269747) in my studio, which is basically an office floor with all the charm and lack thereof. For this shoot, it was the perfect setting.Time
The light was controlled by the flashes, the time of the day was therefore not that relevant.Lighting
The model was sitting in front of a white and a black paper background. The white background was a bit closer to the model and overexposed by a studio flash. The black background was further away and did not get any light. A second flash with grid was used to light the model from the side, lighting just half of her face. The background and her centre were aligned in order to achieve the effect.Equipment
I used two studio flashes (one for the background with a standard reflector, the other with a gritted tele-reflector), black and white paper background, Nikon D800 with 85 mm, radio trigger.Inspiration
I just love to play with light... This shot is part of a series "contrast-rich portraits".Editing
In post, I did some minor skin retouching, clarity, contrast, exposure and cropping. In my camera bag
In the studio, I typically use a Nikon D800 with a Nikon 1.8 85mm. As lights I typically use studio flashes such as Godox QT600 and Jinbei HD600v. However, as many of my shoots are on the beach or underwater, the content of my bag varies a lot.Feedback
Be nice to your model, play with light, have fun!
