A first visit to Bedruthan Steps and a first chance to use my new Lee Soft Grad filters!

Having never been to this beach before, I made the mistake of pre-visualising a unique image based on photos I've seen of the location. I checked the tide before arriving - but even this didn't behave as I anticipated - with the beach only starting to be revealed maybe 3 hours before low tide.

I persevered with attempting to shoot the image I hoped for to no avail.

When the sun dipped below the mid level cloud as the beach became more accessible, it's light was very bright and harsh.

Without any "usable" pictures taken by the time the sun had set, I decided to stick around as the then clear sky retained a lot of light. This image was taken around 20 minutes after sunset as the odd big wave would sneak around the rocks and leave interesting foam trails.

Still unconvinced that I had bagged a decent shot I decided to try a monochrome conversion which seemed to work well.

The tall "stack" towards the distance called "Samaritan Island" - named after a ship, "The Good Samaritan" which wrecked there in October 1846. Legend has it, that the several islands dotted along the beach were the stepping stones of the Giant, Bedruthan to short cut across coast.
