No other native duck in North America matches the flamboyant plumage of the male wood duck. Though they are widespread throughout California, they are very elusive and therefore uncommon to see. This was a chance encounter in the marshy area of a fast-moving creek at a local county park. Once spooked, they hide or fly!

When I fist saw images of these ducks a few years ago, I thought they were 'decoys' !! they almost don't look real at times. Such beautiful colors and markings !
